Abstract • Multiaperture observations of the type 1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 have been made to examine the spatial extent of the source of the 3.3 μm emission feature and the 1 - 4 μm continuum. The near-infrared continuum is dominated by a source, possibly thermal in origin, less than 2arcsec (480 pc) in diameter. Nearly 80% of the 4.7×107L_sun; in the 3.3 μm feature, however, is found to arise in a region between 240 and 730 pc from the central source; this implies the presence of dust in this region with a temperature of ≥300K. Dust heating must occur in situ and is most likely due to radiation from young, hot stars in circumnuclear H II regions.
