Overview: As part of NASA's Universe of Learning, the IPAC Communications and Education Team is producing a series of short videos on various topics in astronomy featuring Hollywood celebrities. Our goals are to pique general public interest in NASA’s scientific exploration of humanity’s cosmic origins, and provide pathways to further learning opportunities. By partnering with Hollywood, we hope to reach a broad audience, including populations whose participation in STEM are underrepresented.
The videos are designed to be “evergreen” public outreach products, and appropriate for sharing on social media. The screenplays were developed by an integrated team of subject matter experts, visualization scientists, multimedia producers, and outreach professionals from the Universe of Learning partner institutions: Space Telescope Science Institute, Chandra X-ray Center, Caltech/IPAC, Jet Propulsion Laboratory Exoplanet Exploration Program, and Sonoma State University. These videos include humor, animation, and fictional narratives designed to attract and entertain an audience beyond those of traditional NASA videos. Our team leverages experience gained from production of celebrity videos for the “Irrelevant Astronomy” series for the Spitzer Space Telescope.
The first videos in the series will be launched by the end of 2017.
