FIR Polarization Study <=== abstract ===> SCIENTIFIC ABSTRACT There are still a number of problems in the nature of the diffuse interstellar medium (DISM), which have to be investigated by observations. The questions to be addressed involve a clear identification of various phases of the DISM, their volume or mass fractions, their roles and interrelations, the transition processes from one to another phase, and the properties and size distribution of dust grains in the DISM. This proposal is the second part of the program to study the DISM, where the FIR polarization observation is proposed to investigate the properties of interstellar dust grains. The emission spectrum from the DISM peaks at the far-infrared region and the gas and dust behaviors are best studied by the far-infrared observations. The FIR polarization measurement of the thermal emission from the DISM by PHOT-C will provide information on various components of dust grains contributing to the FIR continuum emission. The polarization in the FIR emission is thought to arise from the emission of aspherical dust grains. The dependence of the polarization on the wavelength can be predicted if there is only one dust component contributing to the observed continuum emission. The IRAS and COBE observations, however, indicate that there are the emission coming from the classical sub-micron-sized grains and an additional component in the wavelength range shorter than 60 micron. The excess emission below 60 micron has been interpreted in terms of the temperature-fluctuating very small grains (1-10 nm size), which may have different polarization characteristics from those of sub-micron-sized grains. The spectrum of polarization can thus provide the information on the contribution of various components to the FIR emission together with the properties of each component.
