Barthel"} <=== title ===> IR Photometric Survey of a sample of southern radio sources <=== abstract ===> SCIENTIFIC ABSTRACT A complete sample of southern radio sources has been defined on the basis of their flux densities at 408 MHz. The sample, designated the Molonglo S4 sample or MS4, is intended to have a similar source density to the 3CR catalogue (Jenkins, Pooley and Riley, 1977 MNRAS 84, 693), which contains northern sources stronger than 9 Jy at 178 MHz. The MS4 sample is expected to fulfil the same role in the southern hemisphere as the 3CR sample has in the north in providing the basis for statistically significant studies on tractable numbers of sources. The sources in the MS4 sample were selected from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue (Large et al, 1981, MNRAS 194, 693; Large, Cram, Burgess, 1991, Observatory, 111, 72) which contains 12141 sources and is complete to a limiting flux density of 1 Jy. MS4 sources were selected according to the following criteria: i) declination between -85d and -30d, ii) integrated flux density S_408 >= 4 Jy, iii) galactic latitude >= 10d, iv) not in the Magellanic Cloud regions The MS4 sample contains 232 sources selected in this manner. A number of programs are being carried out in the radio and optical regimes to measure the properties of the sample: i) observations of the morphology of sample members on scales larger than 40 arcsec at 843 MHz using the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST), ii) observations of the 4 -- 40 arcsec structure at 5 GHz using the Australia Telescope, iii) observations of the compact structure in the nuclei of the associated optical objects at resolutions of 100 milli-arcsec using the Parkes-Tidbinbilla interferometer at 2.3 GHz. iv) R-band CCD images of the objects fainter than B-J = 20 using the Anglo Australian Telescope. IRAS observations of MS4 sample detected eleven galaxies and one quasar: 0131-367 (NGC612), 0320-373 (Fornax A), 0427-539 (IC2082), 0521-365, 0637-752, 1302-492 (NGC4945), 1322-427 (Cen A), 1549-790, 2020-575, 2031-359, 2152-699, 2158-380. We propose observing 86 objects (spring launch) or 69 objects (autumn launch) from the MS4 sample. The source list has been composed by taking only objects with measured redshifts from the literature or from follow up programmes, and taking into account the visibility of objects for the two launch windows.
