Xu"} <=== title ===> Star formation in disk HII regions (1) <=== abstract ===> SCIENTIFIC ABSTRACT One aim of this proposal is to study in detail the FIR properties of star forming regions in order to investigate the dependence of SFR on size, IR flux, dust and gas temperature, and chemical abundance of these regions. Therefore all objects are selected from only two well studied galaxies, in order to overcome the distance problem. The second aim of this observation is to study the FIR/radio correlation down to relatively faint objects. OBSERVATION STRATEGY The infrared emission of 63 HII regions in the two spiral galaxies M33 and M101 will be measured in 4 wavelength bands: with PHT-P2 at 25 um, PHT-P3 at 60 and 100 um, and with PHT-C200 at 160 um. Both galaxies are observable in both the spring and autumn missions. The observation is done with sparse maps (AOT PHT17,18,19 or PHT37,38,39). One reference outside the galaxies is taken before and after each sparse map (with AOT PHT03). The chosen aperture of 52" (PHT-P) refers to 300pc in M33 and to 2.5kpc in M101, larger than the size of the HII regions. The brightness of the objects at 60um ranges from 34 Jy down to ~0.2Jy. Information on the galaxy background radiation will be provided by maps done in the PHT proposal ISO.4.2.2 ("Heating of the interstellar medium in spirals: Mapping of nearby galaxies") by H. Hippelein et al. Because the number of AOTs per proposal can not exceed 99 the proposal is splitted up in 3 proposals according to the detector used. The present proposal is for PHT-P2. The filter used is 25 um, integration times are 16 sec for the (optical) bright sources and 32 sec for faint sources. The expected s/n ratio ranges from ~1 for the faintest objects to ~100 for the brightest ones.
