Guest Observer Program

While the majority of the observing time to be executed by WFIRST will be devoted to dedicated surveys defined by the BAO, SNe, weak-lensing and exoplanet microlensing science teams, of order a year of observing time is expected to be made available for a Guest Observer program. The unique capabilities of WFIRST - wide field-of-view for imaging and low-resolution spectroscopy, relatively small and very well characterized PSF, and red/near-IR bandpasses - will favor GO programs requiring large areas and/or very good near-IR sensitivity. Programs to obtain 2nd epoch observations of fields observed for the BAO and WL programs, potentially covering thousands of square degrees, could also be proposed to probe the faint end of the halo or disk MF or to search for rare transient events.
