If you have an emergency of any sort please call Caltech Security, on a campus phone, ext 5000. From your cell phone, 626-395-5000. It is important to contact Security rather than 911 as Security is trained in first aid and can/will provide an escort to Police, Fire, Emergency vehicles which may otherwise be delayed looking for a particular building.
FIRE
In case of fire, please exit the building via the stairs. During working hours you will be assisted to the proper evacuation site by other building occupants, floor wardens wearing orange vests. Please do not block doorways or remain in the building for any reason. Campus Security will be notified and immediately come to check on the building. Following evacuation occupants are not to re-enter the building until instructed to do so by emergency response personnel.
Incase of a Major Fire:
EARTHQUAKE
Be prepared. Do not place any objects on high shelves or elsewhere where they could fall on heads during an earthquake, without securing them. All cabinets, bookshelves, racks, or other heavy things should be bolted to the floor or walls.
During the shaking stay inside. Remain calm and watch for falling objects. Do not rush for the exit.
Duck, cover, and hold. Take cover under a table or desk and hold on. Stay away from windows, overhead fixtures, tall objects, and electrical equipment.
If no cover is near, duck and hold near an interior wall. Shield your head and face from falling debris.
If outside, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, utility wires, and overhead structures.
After the shaking is over, please immediately evacuate the building. During normal business hours you will be assisted by other employees.
UTILITY FAILURES
Power Failure: In the event of a power failure, battery-powered emergency lights will illuminate the hallways.
Elevator Failure: If in an elevator when it breaks down, use the elevator telephone or alarm button to summon assistance. If an elevator stops during a power failure, remain calm. Facilities Management personnel check all elevators for stranded riders. Do not attempt to pry open the elevator doors or use the overhead hatch. Report all elevator problems to Rosanne Scholey at 626-379-3771.
FLOODING
Report any flooding to Rosanne Scholey at 626-379-3771. Avoid contact with electrical equipment. Provide pertinent information to emergency response personnel.
