The NASA Herschel Science Center is an important resource that has been established to directly support the US-based community in proposing and using the Herschel Space Observatory. The NHSC is here to help you get the very most out of this special scientific opportunity!

1. Herschel - Onward to launch!

The Herschel Space Observatory has completed the final set of key tests, and has been shipped safely to the launch site; Europe's spaceport, the Guiana Space Centre, Kourou. Once at the Guiana Space Centre, the Herschel and Planck spacecraft will undergo their final checks and be prepared for launch. Herschel and Planck are scheduled to launch into space together by an Ariane rocket on 16 April 2009.

To get the latest news on the Herschel Space Observatory, as well to see images of the telescope during recent clean room testing, please see the European Space Agency's Herschel Latest News site:

2. NHSC Pre-launch OT and GT KP Data Processing Workshop

The NASA Herschel Science Center is pleased to announce the date of the first US Data Processing Workshop which will be held in Pasadena, California. Please mark your calendar for this three-day workshop. The workshop is aimed at providing DP support for US scientists who are part of currently accepted Key programs (Open Time and Guaranteed Time). Future DP workshops will be open to the general Herschel community.

Key Program Data Processing Workshop dates:

Wednesday April 8 - Friday April 10, 2009

The main emphasis of the workshop will be to provide hands-on experience for the participants in handling Herschel data, running pipelines and becoming familiar with the main tools and extended work packages that are available as part of the Herschel DP system. Because of space limitations, it will be necessary to restrict registration to no more than 2 participants per team.

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN.

Go to http://www.ipac.caltech.edu/Herschel/workshops.shtml for workshop details and registration information.
