The NASA Herschel Science Center is an important resource
that has been established to directly support the US-based
community in proposing and using the Herschel Space Observatory.
The NHSC is here to help you get the very most out of this
special scientific opportunity!
1. First NHSC Data Processing Workshop Announcement
Workshop Date: Jan 9th and 10th 2009.
Registration Opens: October 1 2008
The NHSC is happy to announce the First NHSC Herschel Data Processing
Workshop to be held at NHSC in Pasadena, CA on Friday and Saturday, 9/10
January 2009 (Immediately following the AAS meeting in nearby Long
Beach, CA). This workshop, primarily directed to US-based members of
Open Time Key Program Teams and Guaranteed Time holders, will provide a
comprehensive overview of the Herschel Data Processing System and its
usage by Herschel Observers. There will be overview presentations and
lots of hands-on time with the system directed by our NHSC experts.
Depending on interest, it is likely that attendance to the workshop will
be limited to as few as 2 or 3 members per team.
Registration and other information will be made available on the NHSC
web pages on October 1. To register, just follow the links on our
workshop web-page at
http://www.ipac.caltech.edu/Herschel/workshops.shtml. As always, you
can also send questions to the NHSC Helpdesk at
http://www.ipac.caltech.edu/Herschel/helpdesk
2. Herschel Opportunity in New Hubble Fellowship Program
NASA is pleased to announce a new postdoctoral fellowship program, the
Hubble Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, to support outstanding
postdoctoral scientists whose research is broadly related to NASA Cosmic
Origins scientific goals as addressed by ANY of the missions in this
program: the Herschel Space Observatory, Hubble Space Telescope (HST),
James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Stratospheric Observatory for
Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), and the Spitzer Space Telescope.
Applications are solicited for fellowships to begin in the fall of 2009.
We anticipate offering up to seventeen fellowships this year, selected
by peer review. The selection committee will include experts from areas
of research spanning the full range of the Cosmic Origins theme. On
behalf of NASA, the Space Telescope Science Institute will administer
the Hubble Fellowship program.
The new Hubble Fellowship program is an amalgamation of the pre-existing
Hubble and Spitzer Fellowship programs, and aims to support wider
research efforts that are related to other missions that fall within
NASA's Cosmic Origins science theme, Herschel, SOFIA and JWST. This
program is open to applicants of any nationality who have earned (or
will have earned) their doctoral degrees on or after January 1, 2006, in
astronomy, physics, or related disciplines. The fellowships are tenable
at U.S. host institutions of the fellows' choice, subject to a maximum
of one new fellow per host institution per year. The duration of the
fellowship is up to three years: an initial one-year appointment and two
annual renewals contingent on satisfactory performance and availability
of NASA funds.
The Announcement of Opportunity, which includes detailed program
policies and application instructions is available at the web site:
http://www.stsci.edu/institute/org/spd/hubble-fellowship/ao-2009
Applicants must follow the instructions given in this Announcement.
Inquiries about the Hubble Fellowships may be directed to Dr. Ron Allen
(hfinquiry@stsci.edu).
The deadline for both applications and letters of reference is Thursday,
November 6, 2008. Offers will be made before February 1, 2009, and new
appointments are expected to begin on or about September 1, 2009.
Applications must include the following materials: a cover letter, a
curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a summary of previous and
current research (limited to 3 pages), and a description of the proposed
research (also limited to 3 pages). These documents must be prepared as
pdf files. Applicants must also arrange for three letters of reference
to be sent as separate pdf files directly by their authors, not the
applicants.
Women and members of minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. EOE/
AA/M/F/D/V.
Please note that there was an error on the initial posting of this
opportunity on the AAS job register and at Physics Today yesterday (the
advertisement incorrectly had the text describing the previous, now
discontinued, Hubble Fellowship program which supported postdoctoral
scientists whose research was broadly related to the scientific mission
of the Hubble Space Telescope).
