Overview

The NHSC will host a data processing workshop directed toward US-based members of Key Program (KP) teams, for both Open Time and Guaranteed Time projects. The main emphasis of the workshop will be to provide hands-on experience for the participants in handling Herschel data, running pipelines and becoming familiar with the main tools and extended work packages that are available as part of the Herschel DP system. Because of space limitations, it will be necessary to restrict registration to no more than 2 participants per team, and so we are giving you advanced notice of the dates so that you may plan appropriately. This workshop will provide hands-on experience in handling Herschel data.

In a similar fashion to the March 2009 workshop held at the Herschel Science Center in Madrid, you will have the opportunity to work with Herschel data on your own laptop. We anticipate that the majority of participants will bring their own laptops.*

The format of the workshop will be a mixture of presentations, demos and hands-on sessions.

Users will work with instrument and data specialists. We anticipate covering the following topics:

Registrants will have the opportunity to obtain advice from NHSC instrument experts and developers about how best to plan for DP needs as their projects develop

*See the section below on hardware requirements. If your laptop does not meet the requirements needed for the workshop, the NHSC has a limited number of computers that may be requested, on a first come first served basis, for use PRIOR to the workshop. Please indicate on the registration page if you need a computer.

A similar workshop was held March 24-27, 2009, at ESAC, Madrid. Details.

Transportation to Caltech

Participants are required to handle their own round-trip transportation and accommodations in Pasadena. The workshop will be held in the same building that houses our sister institution, the Spitzer Science Center. Suggested transportation to and from area airports to the Keith Spalding building can be found on the sister SSC web-pages http://ssc.spitzer.caltech.edu/visitorinfo/airportbus.html. A list of local accommodations can be found at http://www.admissions.caltech.edu/visiting/accommodations. We urge participants to use an interactive mapping service, such as Google-Maps, to gauge the distances from available accommodations to the meeting venue at the Keith Spalding Building, which is located at 1200 E. California Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91125. Many hotels and motels are a long walk from Caltech, and some participants may wish to rent a car. Anyone driving to the Caltech campus must obtain a parking permit from us for the days of their participation in the workshop. Please indicate your need for a parking permit in the comment field of the registration form (below) Local transportation (e.g., the free Pasadena ARTS bus) is also available, but with limited geographical coverage within the area. If you have any questions please feel free to submit a ticket to the NHSC Helpdesk.

Parking

The closest available campus parking to the Keith Spalding building is in Lot #3 or Stucture #6, where you may purchase a visitor permit for $5/day. For a map, please go to http://parking.caltech.edu/Parking_Zone_Map.pdf. Additional information may be found at http://parking.caltech.edu/permits.html#visitor . Note that street parking near Caltech is limited to two hours in most locations.
